Reference to Economic Times. Sri Lanka is in one of the worst weather crises of the year; the continuous downpour, flooding and landslides have left 56 dead and caused over 600 houses to be damaged all over the country. Therefore, the government ordered the shutdown of their government offices as well as schools on Friday to protect the people.
Severe Rainfalls cause massive destruction.
The severe weather started last week but however, it got so bad on Thursday when the down pours continued and flooded houses, farms, and major streets, making some of them impassable. There were landslides in the main tea-producing areas of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya and over 25 people died in one day. In addition, 21 individuals are still missing and 14 others injured as it is reported by the Disaster Management Centre.
Several Areas Affected by Deadly Landslides.
Even though central highlands sustained the most damage, other areas had registered fatalities due to unexpected landslides. Since rain has increased chances of further ground collapses, the government has recommended people of potential areas to move to safer places.
Public Service is Shut down by Government.
With the situation getting worse, the government decided to close all the state offices and educational establishments on Friday. River and reservoir overflows have blocked major highways, trees, rocks and mudfalls have destroyed roads. Passenger train services were also put on hold following the submerging of some railway lines or the blocking of lines by rubble.
Intensification of Rescue Operations.
Rescue teams have been on 24/7 despite the dangerous weather conditions. A helicopter of the Air Force saved three people trapped on the roof of a submerged home and the Navy and the police used boats to help evacuate residents trapped in flooded neighbourhoods. In addition, the video footage showed a vehicle carried away by the strong flood waters near Ampara leading to the demise of all the three passengers.
A Nation Braces for More Rain
Even though rescue missions continue, the authorities warn that further heavy rainfall may impact various areas, which might lead to the further development of the crisis. As many of the communities are on isolation and most of the necessary transportation routes are blocked, disaster teams are on high alert.
