The meeting between the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Indonesian defence Sjafrie Sjamsoedd on Thursday, in New Delhi, has seen India and Indonesia reaffirm their extensive long-standing strategic partnership. The two leaders focused on the expansion of defence cooperation and the acceleration of the current discussion on the future acquisition of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile by Indonesia.
BrahMos Deal Moves Forward

India and Indonesia reached an agreement to strengthen collaboration in the area of maritime domain awareness and cybersecurity as well as in the joint operational preparedness. The Defence Ministry was keen to underline that the two countries are committed to further maritime security cooperation, particularly in the Indian Ocean, where strategic rivalry is rapidly gaining pace.
Cooperation in Underwater Technology and Defence Medicine.
Indonesia also recognised the experience that India had on submarine development and defence supply-chain management more so with the Scorpene-class submarine programme. Other opportunities that the two countries embraced in medical defence and pharmaceutical sphere comprised of undertaking research together, transferring technology and specific training programmes to strengthen military health infrastructure.
Military exchanges and widened Joint Exercises.
The ministers have discussed continuing combined exercises with land, air and sea troops. They acknowledged that they will increase the cross-exchange of officers, joint trainings, and academic visits to defence institutions thus increasing their interoperability and knowledge exchange. India also made a symbolic gift of horses and a ceremonial carriage of the Remount Veterinary Corps of the Indian Army to Indonesia.
Devotion to the Higher Level of Engagement.
Both leaders were pleased with the results of the discussion and stressed the importance of continuing to have high-level contacts on a regular basis. In the face of increasing insecurity and a changing geopolitical environment, a long-term partnership between India and Indonesia will be critical as far as peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region are concerned as far as external powers have been keen on extending their influence.
