India is Vexed with the Ludicrous Chinese Detention Claim.
Refrence to Hindustan Times. India has also protested sharply over the action of the Chinese against the diplomatic action of the Indians on 30th April 2011, after the arrest of an Indian citizen called Prema Wangjom Thongdok, who was an Indian citizen of Arunachal Pradesh, at the Shanghai Pudong Airport, due to the declaration by the Chinese authorities that her Indian passport was invalid. The officials claimed that she could not be granted a passport due to the fact that she was born in the state of Arunachal Pradesh a land that China claims was mistakenly understood.
Traveller Mocked and Pressured to get a Chinese Passport.
A 47-year-old financial adviser based in the United Kingdom and native of Rupa in Arunachal Pradesh (who was on his way to Japan on 21 November) had a short stop at Shanghai. Her experience started when she was singled out by security officers when she was being screened.
She said that she was joked at and mocked at by immigration officials because of her nationality and they would laugh at her and keep saying that Arunachal has nothing to do with India. They also instructed her to apply to receive a Chinese passport, of which she said it was humiliating and quite disturbing.
Refused Food and Internet as well as boarding an aircraft.
This was aggravated when the authorities took away her passport, denied her a chance to board her connecting flight to China Eastern Airlines and denied her food. She also had difficulties accessing information since Google is not operational in China and she could not easily make other arrangements to travel.
Also, the staff of the airlines were imitating the behaviour of the immigration officers and this made the atmosphere hostile and intimidating.
Indian Embassy Intervenes
Thongdok was able to call upon friends in the UK hours later and made contact with Indian mission in Shanghai and Beijing. Indian officials appeared within an hour, fed them and went directly to Chinese authorities. This support finally helped her to leave China; she was forced to re-book her flight to Thais and work remotely there.
It is worth noting that she had moved through Shanghai a year ago without any problems, and it makes the occurrence even more terrifying.
A Threat to the Sovereignty of India.
Thongdok has addressed the Ministry of External Affairs, India, and has asserted that the incident is a direct threat to the sovereignty of India and demanded a vigorous diplomatic response. She is also demanding restitution of the harassment, emotional trauma, physical fatigue and the loss of money she has incurred. She mentioned that even though she lived in the UK many years, she still had her Indian passport as she cared about her country, but she thinks that she could have received the same treatment in case she had a British passport.
Indian Condemns Chinese actions.
The Indian consulate in Shanghai has already declared that the Arunachal Pradesh is undoubtedly part of Indian territory and that its citizens have every right to possess and use Indian passports to travel. The officials also pointed out that the actions of China are against the Chicago and Montreal aviation conventions thus causing unnecessary obstacles at a time when the two countries are trying to level grounds in their relationship.
