Refernce to Free press Journal. New Delhi, October 16, 2025: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is too much scared of the US President Donald Trump, with major foreign policy decisions of India being determined by Washington at the moment. His critic was made soon after Trump alleged that Modi had assured him personally that India would no longer buy oil with Russia, a move which the US leader has termed as a significant move towards isolating Moscow on the issue of war in Ukraine.
Sharp Attack of PM Modi by Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi went to social media platform X (previously twitter), claiming that PM Modi has given President Trump permission to announce on behalf of India. He said that Modi allows Trump to make decisions and announce that India will not purchase Russian oil and keeps sending congratulatory messages despite constant snubbing.
He also blamed Modi on canceling the visit of the Finance Minister to the US, missing the Sharm el-Sheikh conference and remaining silent regarding the Operation Sindoor that the US commented publicly. Gandhi argues that such measures show a tendency towards submissiveness as opposed to independence in the Indian foreign policy.
Congress Doubles Barrels on Criticism.
A serious attack was further put on the government by the congress general secretary, Jairam Ramesh who said that the US has been making announcements on the policy decisions made by India even before they are made by the officials of India. He indicated that the first announcement of a stoppage of Operation Sindoor came by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, at 5:37 PM IST on May 10, 2025.
As Ramesh observed Trump has made numerous claims claiming responsibility in stopping the operation boasting about it more than fifty times in various countries. Our Prime Minister has not said a word though these claims are public. He went on to state that currently Trump claims that Modi assured him that India will not receive the Russian oil as an import. Apparently, the choice of India is being delivered to America. The breast of 56 inches has fallen and shrivelled.
Comments of Trump in the Oval Office.
President Trump, speaking out of the Oval Office on Wednesday confirmed that he had had a direct conversation with Modi on the issue. Trump said, he is a friend of mine, we get along very well. However, we were not pleased when India was purchasing oil with Russia since it supports Putin in his war.
Trump also alleged that he was assured by Modi personally that India would cease to take Russian oil, which he described as a big step. He also encouraged China to do the same and presented the measure as a larger operation to cut the sources of revenue of Moscow due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
India: Stand on Russian Oil Imports.
Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, India, the third-largest oil importer in the world, has dramatically raised its purchases of discounted Russian crude. According to the statistics presented by the Centre of Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), India is currently the second-largest purchaser of Russian fossil fuels following China.
Even America had been relying on the Middle East suppliers, India started sourcing more at Russia when the Russian oil became cheaper due to Western sanctions and decreased European demand. As a result, Russian crude has taken up almost 40 percent of Indian total oil imports that was lower than 1 percent before the war.
In the light of increased US pressure, New Delhi has always insisted that its energy policy is founded on national interest of the country, affordability, and energy security. The authorities have made it clear that the Indian position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict is independent, moderate and aimed at ensuring the stability of the economy within the country.
Brewing Diplomatic Tug-of-War.
The remarks by Rahul Gandhi have rekindled the argument of strategic independence of India in the face of increasing globalization. Critics say that Modi is too close to Washington, but proponents believe that having the US as an ally enhances the Indian geopolitical success.
According to the suggestions of analysts, it will become more challenging to keep the balance between Washington and Moscow as the tension intensifies around the world. The problem facing India currently is how it can find its energy requirements without affecting diplomatic autonomy, a juggling action that could form its foreign policy during the decades to come.
