US Wants to strengthen its relations with Pakistan, Not India: Marco Rubio.

Rubio elucidates US stand on Balance between India and Pakistan.

Reference to Hindustan times. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio guaranteed that the attempts of Washington to improve relations with Pakistan will not weaken its long-term and strategic relationship with India. In an interview on his flight to Qatar, Rubio stressed that the relationship between the US and Pakistan is just a part of a wider strategy to establish positive relations with various partners in Asia.

Rubio observed that we comprehend the anxieties of India considering the historical animosity with Pakistan. Nevertheless, the United States needs to be in balanced relations with other countries. We do not plan to develop rivalry, but rather establish stability and cooperation.

Focus on a Rational and Growed-up Direction.

The Secretary of State emphasized the fact that the India-US bond was strong, historic, and imperative. He also said that he expected New Delhi to react with maturity and pragmatics since global diplomacy usually enforced malleable alliances.

Rubio continued by saying that India too has its own connections with nations that the United States might not relate directly with. That is what makes diplomacy effective, it is seeking a point of intersection without violating differences.

Rubio will meet the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday in Malaysia in the course of ASEAN Summit to address some of the major regional and bilateral matters.

The Washington-Growing Interaction with Pakistan.

Washington and Islamabad have made some steps in the recent months to increase cooperation. A critical minerals partnership agreement was signed by both countries and the countries had a counter-terrorism dialogue in Islamabad which was an important stride to make.

Furthermore, in September, President Donald Trump received a visit by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir in the White House. Another occasion when Pakistan was put in the spotlight was when Trump held his October Peace Summit in Egypt where Sharif noted the US attempts to stabilize the Middle East.

As Rubio says, such engagements indicate a common desire in the region stability, economic growth and cooperation in counter terrorism-areas in which both countries can realize concrete gains.

US and India Working through the energy and trade differences.

Another issue that Rubio touched on was ongoing discussions between New Delhi and Washington that were meant to improve tensions that arose in July. The main point of disagreement is the US sanctions imposed on Russia energy companies Rosneft and Lukoil that may impact Indian energy imports.

Washington has also been pressuring India to cut its reliance on Russian oil even levying a penalty tariff of 25 percent on some Indian exports related to its energy imports. Nevertheless, Rubio observed that India is already considering diversifying its sources of oil such as increased energy trading in the United States.

According to him, India desires to have a balanced and a secure energy portfolio. That opens the way to more intensive collaboration between our two nations.

Energy Diplomacy: Common Ground.

The President of the United States Donald Trump had earlier stated that India had agreed to phase out its Russian energy purchases. But this statement was not confirmed or denied by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Rather, it reiterated the interest of India to ensure that its population remains diversified in its access to energy and supply at affordable prices.

India too renewed its motive of increasing imports of the energy suppliers in the US, which is a pragmatic move towards enhancing India-US energy trade.

Rubio ended by showing hope: The United States and India will still have the challenges ahead but our friendship will still stand. We are partners of belief and vision.

A Greater South Asian Vision.

These statements of Rubio point out the changing foreign policy of the United States towards South Asia, that is, the multi-dimensional approach instead of the dualistic one. The revived engagement with Pakistan is an indication of a practicality to reach the issue of the security in the region as it continues to support the development of India and its global ambitions.

With the changing of the geopolitical situation, Washington seeks to strike a balance between its strategic alliances with realism whereby cooperation with one country does not undermine its relationship with another.
