Reliance Refiners Can Stop Importing Russian Oil at Export Only Refinery to comply with EU regulations.
Company Transits to Non-Russian Crude Even Before January of 2026 Sanctions.
Reliance industries limited declared that it is halting the movement of Russian crude oil in its export-only SEZ refinery at Jamnagar, Gujarat. The ruling is in line with the impending sanctions by the European Union that limit the importation of fuel that has been refined using Russian crude.
Reliance had been India largest buyer of discounted Russian oil, which it used to feed on and generate petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) at its massive Jamnagar plant. Nevertheless, as new restrictions were about to come the company shifted to non-Russian crude earlier than initially anticipated. Reliance stated that all export as at December 1 will be based on non-Russian oil.
Conformity Is Met with International Diktats.
The action is in response to the recent sanctions by the United States on Rosneft and Lukoil, the major exporters of oil in Russia. Reliance indicated that it would be compliant with all global standards of compliance and restructure its operation to be in line with the changing rules.
The refinery is separated into two units; Special Economic Zone (SEZ) which is used in exporting and a domestic tariff area (DTA) which is used to serve the Indian market. As the SEZ refinery stopped accepting Russian crude in November 20, the outstanding pre-committed cargoes will be refined within the DTA.
Shift in Supply Strategy
According to industry sources Reliance started to reduce its imports of the Russians as the European Union implemented its 18th round of sanctions earlier this year. Despite the fact that Russia provides almost one-third of Indian crude imports, the firm is currently reevaluating its sourcing policy to prevent possible scrutiny and remain open to the major markets in the world.
As a matter of fact, the recalibration can become faster because Reliance will level long-term contracts with Rosneft and adjust to the new conditions in the sphere of the fast-changing geopolitics and regulations. As a result, the company will look to find other suppliers of crude to protect its export of fuel in the world.
