Ndtv India-UK Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed the long-awaited India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on July 24, 2025, in Chequers, the official country residence of the British Prime Minister. This historic agreement will strengthen both economic and educational ties between India and the United Kingdom.

Business commitment to strengthen each other.

India-UK FTA will help to decrease or eliminate trade tariffs. Consequently there will be the free movement of goods and services between the two countries. The authorities are hopeful that this may result in the doubling of bilateral trade to $120 billion by 2030, and that this will offer new prospects in various fields.

The agreement focuses on industries such as textiles, footwear, gems, seafood, and engineering.In addition, PM Modi emphasized that the agreement will ensure that companies conduct business in the two markets more easily and cheaply.

In the combined speech, the Prime Minister also capped this by saying that this would reduce the operation cost and increase business confidence in the two countries.

The other important leaks out of the meeting was that six British universities would open their campuses in India. PM Modi informed that various institutions in the UK are planning to establish their branches in large Indian cities. This will enhance international academic relationships and thousands of students will be benefited.

The University of Southampton has already opened its campus in Gurugram, which PM Modi highlighted as an example that other future partnerships between the two countries can follow.

This project also supports India’s National Education Policy (NEP 2020), encouraging top international universities to set up campuses in the country. As a result, Indian students will now have access to… a world class education without the need to go abroad.
