Nine Killed, 20 Injured in High-Intensity Blast Near Red Fort
Reference to NDTV.Nine People were confirmed dead and over 20 injured when a bomb that exploded close to the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening. The bomb explosion was of high intensity and resulted in a high alert status in multiple states in India. The police commissioner of Delhi stated that the explosion took place inside a slowly moving car close to the welcome traffic circle of the Red Fort at approximately 6:52 PM.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer, A.K. Malik also stated that the fire units happened to be present on the scene at that moment and they were able to take control of the fire by around 7:29 PM. The shockwave from the blast wrecked 22 nearby vehicles and photos of the scene showed wrecked vehicles covered by a large blast of fire.
Eyewitnesses described the noise from the explosion as “very loud” and many reported seeing a “huge fireball” lighten up the night sky. The area seeing heavy tourist traffic and several fire trucks were exchangeability nearby quickly cordoning off the area.
Several States Heightened Security
Following the explosion, police in Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar were put on high alert. Sources told NDTV that security agencies in the Maharashtra capital increased security at the airports, railway stations and public places.
A communication received from Lucknow directed police departments to boost police patrolling and vigilance in sensitive areas across Uttar Pradesh and Dehradun.
Border security was increased along the Indo-Nepal border. All border entry points are being surveyed by the BSF and local police. In addition, intelligence units are surveying movement across the open border for any adverse threats.
Rajasthan Police On High Alert
In Rajasthan, DGP Rajiv Sharma ordered all Range Inspector Generals and District Superintendents to be on high alert, while security in all border districts has been stepped up with every vehicle arriving from other states stopped as part of checking.
Police officers in that state were instructed to ensure patrols and surveillance of sensitive areas 24/7. “We are doubly confident there will be no chance for mistakes in this situation,” a police officer in the region said.
Investigation Underway
The investigation is now being conducted by the Special Cell of Delhi Police along with ATS. Initial investigation reports suggest that the occupants of the car were inside when the explosion occurred; thus, the motive of the blast and how it happened is still under investigation.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and forensic samples collected from the scene to determine whether it was an act of terrorism versus a deliberate act of sabotage.
