Refernce to HIndustan Times. On Friday, an Indian Air Force pilot died after the crash of a Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Mk -1) in a high-speed demonstration at the Dubai Air Show. It was the second aircraft accident in history when the Tejas did not accomplish an aerial manoeuvre.
The pilot also lost his life when the jet caught fire.
The IAF officially announced that the fighter jet had gone out of control in the aerial display and burst into flames as soon as it hit the ground.
There were rumors that the indigenous planes crashed on the ground and caused a huge fireball that spread through the social media.
The IAF was deeply saddened by the fact that the tragedy took place and the pilot lost his life. The death is extremely saddening to the service and it sympathizes with the bereaved family throughout this mourning time.
A commission of inquiry has been appointed in order to determine the real cause of the accident.
Induction Preceded by Incident Mk-1A.
The accident took place at a very inopportune time, just before the IAF was to induce the advanced LCA Mk1A. India has over time developed a reputation of building its defence manufacturing system and the risk of negative speculation is not far off whenever there is an accident with the aircraft.
This is the second incident that was recorded in Tejas programme. In a similar incident in March 2024, a Tejas fighter plane crashed in and around Jaisalmer soon after being involved in a large-scale tri-service exercise; the pilot successfully ejected his plane.
Tejas Appearance during the Air Show.
The crashed LCA Mk+1 was also in the IAF display team at the bi-annual Dubai Air Show, when Emirates Airline was celebrating its 40 th anniversary. The event was attended by a huge group of aviation industry workers including the representatives of key international aviation companies, including Dassault Aviation, Airbus, Embraer, Lockheed Martin, Thales, Bombardier, and Calidus.
The IAF currently has two Tejas Mk -1 squadrons with the earliest of them being commissioned in July 2016. The aircrafts that were involved in the two accidents were early IOCs and FOCs, which were the first operative versions of the native fighter.
When a Significant Aviation Incident has a Tragic End.
The tragic accident in the Dubai Air Show that started on 17 November and was supposed to end on 21 November occurred on the last day of the show. Although the event featured breakthrough aircraft deals and state of the art defence technology, the Tejas crash ended up giving a dark shade to the proceedings.
