Congress Letter to Amit Shah
On September 28, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugipal sent a letter to Shah stating that an old ABVP leader, Printu Mahadev, representing the BJP in a Kerala news channel discussion about the Ladakh violence matter, openly said that Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest.
Venugipal emphasised that this was not a slip of tongue on a junior member but a product of the poisonous hate propaganda that was being propagated intentionally. He said that political figures who oppose such threats are not safe and this should be the burden of the Home Minister to explain whether the government endorses this form of politics.
The letter further added that, disregarding such threatening remark would be viewed as tacit approval of violence against Rahul Gandhi. Venugipal criticized the silence of the government by accusing it of playing with fire by politicising the security of a leader who has lost two of her family members already to assassinations.
Kerala Opposition reaction.
V.D. Satheesan, the Kerala Opposition Leader also criticized the statement, claiming it depicted a wish to kill Rahul Gandhi. He surpassed that the citizens of India would never tolerate such actions because Rahul Gandhi is a symbol of resistance to communal and authoritarian powers.
Rahul Gandhi’s Foreign Tour
As the scandal played out, Rahul Gandhi was abroad. Pawan Khera, congress representative, announced that the Leader of Opposition was making a trip to four South American countries, during which he will discuss the issues with political leaders, students, and businesses. According to media reports, he is likely to visit Brazil and Colombia and will have various meetings with various presidents and high-ranking officials.
Fears of Rahul Gandhi Safety.
This is after new fears were raised by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) that protects the security of Rahul, following the cancellation of SPG protection of the Gandhi family in 2019. In a recent letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the CRPF said that Gandhi, who has visited foreign countries half a dozen times in the last nine months, has breached their security protocols on six occasions, as he failed to notify them in advance of his trips.
The CRPF claims that he had travelled to countries such as Italy, Vietnam, Dubai, Qatar, London and Malaysia without the knowledge of the agency. Another letter was also dispatched to Rahul stating that such lapses may jeopardize his security Z+ which is based on the Yellow Book protocol whereby all movements, particularly overseas travel must have advance details.
Security Background
Rahul Gandhi, and his mother Sonia Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi have had SPG cover before, which was downgraded by the government in 2019. He has now been granted one of the greatest security protections ever, that of Z+ security with Advance Security Liaison (ASL) but security forces have insisted that his cooperation is critical in ensuring its level is effective.
