Indian weightlifting superstar Mirabai Chanu became another accomplished winner in her career as she secured the silver medal in the women 48kg category in the world weightlifting championship in Forde, Norway, on Friday.

The two-time world winner (2017) and silver medallist (2022) placed herself on the podium again with a total of 199kg–pulling 84kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk. This is the third career world championships medal Chanu has won and a good comeback into the 48kg category after competing in the 49kg division in recent years.

Chanu had a bad start in the snatch part where she missed her 87kg thrice and settled on 84kg. She however made a splendid recovery in the clean and jerk, with her customary composure. The Olympic silver medallist successfully completed all three tries-109kg, 112kg and 115kg– matching her Tokyo Olympics result in 2021 where she was a podium athlete.

As the chief coach Vijay Sharma said before the event, the main aim of the team was that Chanu would surpass the 200kg limit and reclaim her competitive advantage over the world’s best. Although she has just missed that target, her performance in clean and jerk once again has shown why she is one of the most dependable lifters in the sport.

Ri Song Gum of North Korea produced a stunning performance in order to secure the gold medal. Achieved two new world records in her explosive lifts, weighting 213kg (91kg + 122kg). Her last clean and jerk attempt at 122kg was a new standard across the globe and a reminder of her superiority in the category.

Thailand took the bronze with Thanyathon Sukcharoen who lifted 198kg (88kg + 110kg) and placed second behind Chanu.

It is another glowing moment in the career that has already given inspiration to generations of Indian athletes. Since becoming the first Indian woman to hold a world title in 2017, then the first Indian woman to take a silver at the Olympics in Tokyo, and a second world championship medal now, she has solidified her place in the world as the icon of Indian weightlifting.
