Cyclone Montha Batters Andhra Pradesh, Heavy Downpour Lash Odisha.

Andhra Coast Severe Cyclone, Two Lives Lost.

It was caused by a cyclone Montha that struck the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday evening bringing about heavy rainfall, devastating winds and massive disturbance in the state. The government has also suspended the transportation of vehicles in the affected areas like Krishna, Eluru and Kakinada beginning 8.30 pm on Tuesday till 6 am on Wednesday in the aim of establishing safety among the citizens. However, emergency medical services were not put under the restrictions.

Massive Destruction and Red Alert.

In the morning other districts such as Visakhapatnam, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna and Vizianagaram were also struck by continuous torrent and wind speed up to 80 kmph. The IMD issued a red warning on the coastal region as flooding and loss of power were being reported in several regions.

There have been first reports that standing crops of over 38,000 hectares and Horticulture with an output of 1.38 lakh hectares have been destroyed. Some 76,000 people were rendered homeless to relief camps where the government developed 219 medical units to provide emergency aid.

Stopwatch Transport and Power Supply.

There was a collapse of the transport systems caused by a devastating effect of the Andhra Pradesh to the Cyclone Montha. The Indian Railways cancelled, diverted or rescheduled a number of trains on the Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway Zone. Meanwhile, 120 trains were canceled by South Central Railway (SCR) during Monday to Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the 32 flights that could have been operated through Visakhapatnam Airport were cancelled owing to poor weather conditions. The state has deployed swift response teams where they carry mobile transformers and back-up generators to minimize instances of power failures.

Enhancement of Relief and Rescue Operations.

The rescue operation has been enhanced and 11 NDRF and 12 SDRF teams are deployed to execute the task of evacuation and flood control. The authorities also mobilized Fire Services, swimmers and OBM boats in order to help in the relief efforts.

Cyclone shelters have been transformed into community kitchens where children, the aged and vulnerable families are fed hot meals among other necessary attention. The people of the coastal districts were requested to stay at home and to adhere to safety measures offered in the local governments.

Odisha Ready to Welcome More valuable rains and landslides.

Montha cyclone caused continuous precipitation and thunder storm in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada and Malkangiri Odisha. According to meteorology officials, it had received over 9 cm of rain in some places and that it would pour until Wednesday.

The rains also caused the trees to be uprooted, landslides and kutcha houses to be destroyed especially in the Gajapati district. The chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi has talked over the operations of emergency and directed authorities to place the interests of people in first place considering the state policy of zero casualties.

Already, there are more than 12,000 evacuated persons in the at-risk areas to cyclone shelters and more than 2,000 relief centers are ready. Schools and Anganwadi centers of 11 districts will be closed until further notice.

The impact of Cyclone Montha is still felt as the authorities of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are at their full alert and they are tracking the depth of rainfall and are planning the rapid power restoration services in the afflicted regions.
