Delhi Prepares to receive its first fake rain.
Reference To Times of India. .NEW DELHI: Delhi is also looking forward to the first artificial rain in trials on cloud seeding in a bid to clean air in the traffic-prone city which has been insufficient. The mission is to be scheduled as well as the operation will commence at the period of good weather within the city of Kanpur where the airplane employed in the mission will be stationed in coordination with the IIT Kanpur.
On Tuesday morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was 306 (very poor) because the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is already in force after the Diwali. Hopefully, the fact that the naturally produced rain which will be created artificially will be used to clear the pollution will relieve the smog somehow.
What Is Cloud Seeding?
Cloud seeding is the scientific practice of weather engineering in scientific engineering, which deals with adding substances to the clouds, like silver iodide (AgI), or sodium chloride (salt particles). The moisture condenses on these particles, the grains of ice are constructed and accumulated and slung down in the shape of raindrops are established.
Should there be success, the strategy will be in a position to generate more precipitation and purify the air and falsely underestimate the condition of pollution due to the absence of dust and other particles in the air. It is only effective of course in the event of a moist cloud.
How Cloud Seeding Works
- Dispersal- The aircraft sprays silver iodide or salts onto the wet clouds.
- Condensation – These are particles that cause the formation of ice crystal.
- Rain Formation – the crystal will be left to form and melt into a rain provided that the atmosphere conditions will permit.
As was the case in the instance of Delhi, deployment of a Cessna aircraft to spray the seeding material to the identified areas at a given height will be undertaken. During rain, it may take place in 20-30 minutes of the operation.
Why Delhi Is Conducting This Experiment
Because of: Artificial rainfall is an emergency response action to test intense pollution of red winter in the Delhi-NCR because of:
- Industrial emissions and car emissions.
- Contamination of construction dust: open land and construction.
- Biomass and stubble burning
- Nevertheless, low temperature and slow wind.
The induced rainfall will be the solution to the government as far as this will help in the cleaning of the air and make the city more visible.
Challenges and Limitations
Its adopted cloud must also be suitable in cloud seeding such as the nimbostratus which has sufficient moisture. This is not a light work because of the skies of dry winter of Delhi and clouds of western disturbances that do not take long time.
As the professionals of the IMD, CAQM and CPCB, there is a need to incorporate the fact that:
- The results could be short-term.
- The clouds do not all form rain since they have been seeded.
- The fact that the chemical residues of silver iodide are also a cause of concern but the studies have revealed that the damage is very minimal once the long run.
A Collaborative Project: IIT Kanpur and Government of Delhi.
It is a group project of IIT Kanpur and Government of Delhi under the assistance of various central agencies like:
- Ministry of Environment
- Ministry of Civil Aviation
- Ministry of Defence
- IMD Indian Meteorological Agency.
- Directorate General Cerebral Aviation (DGCA).
- Airport Authority of India (AAI).
The approximate cost is 1 lakh rupee per square kilometre and this is the fourth time that the city of Delhi tried to create its rain fall to fight smog.
Cloud Seeding Meteorology: History of the Globe.
The first experiments in dry ice (CO 2 ) seeding experiments were those done in Europe.
- 1931: Europe’s first cloud seeding experiments used dry ice (CO₂).
- 1946-1947 The General Electric Vincent Schaefer and Bernard Vonnegut scientists discovered a very good ice-forming substance which was silver iodide.
- The practice of routine cloud seeding is still practiced by some countries like China, UAE and USA so that they can maximize the rain to relieve the drought and quell the pollution.
The Road Ahead
The synthetic rain is not the ultimate solution but the experts believe that it is one of the short-term corrective procedures that can provide the relief in the existing pollution disaster in Delhi. The government of Delhi is considering a further expansion of the project to the NCR, in case of the trial success, in the coming months.
CM Rekha Gupta told us that she wanted to know whether such an issue regarding the environment could be seeded as well with the help of cloud seeding. This can be an effective instrument in our attempt to manage pollution in the event that it is effective.
