UPI Fraud Is Getting Smarter: The Five Patterns Worth Knowing
Payment rails in India are, technically, well defended. The overwhelming majority of successful frauds do not break the encryption — they persuade the account holder to approve the transfer themselves.
The five recurring patterns
- Collect request framed as a payment. You are told you are receiving money; you are approving a debit.
- Fake support numbers surfaced through search results rather than the official app.
- Screen-sharing apps installed during a 'verification' call.
- QR codes presented as a way to receive a refund.
- Urgency and authority — a claimed official demanding immediate action.
The one rule
Receiving money never requires your PIN. If you are entering a PIN, money is leaving your account.
Report fraud immediately through the national cybercrime helpline — the recovery window is measured in hours.
