Before publication
- Every factual claim is traced to a primary source — a filing, a dataset, an official statement, or a named person with direct knowledge.
- Numbers are checked against the originating body's own publication, not a secondary report.
- Quotes are checked against a recording or contemporaneous notes.
- Where a story makes an allegation, we seek a response before publishing.
Data and statistics
We state the source, the period covered and the method wherever a figure is central to a story. We avoid presenting an estimate as a measurement, and we do not extrapolate beyond what the data supports.
Images
Photographs are credited. Illustrations and AI-generated images used for representation are labelled as such, and are never presented as documentary evidence of an event.
